River Cities Funeral Chapel: View ObituaryPosted on 03/23/2026
 | James Richard Lawrence Ato, better known as "Monk"
October 18th 1955 - March 16th 2026.
Son of Mary and Hermengildo Ato. He is survived by his loving wife Jean, children: James, Patrick(Heidi), Jessica(Sean), Katherine(Chris), his amazing grandchildren: Jordan, Trinity, Leon, Jaelin, Samara, Oliver, Deakin, Lily and Coral, sisters: Joyce and Janice and all of his favorite nieces and nephews and their families and last but not least his best friend Johnny "Mr. John" and his family. James grew up in West Sacramento and everyone knew him as "Monk". He moved to Fair Oaks after he met his wife Jean, where he lived happily married for the last 45 years. In true Monk fashion he spent his final days playing dominos, partying while reminiscing about his glory days, making sure all his family and friends were fed well and special visits from old soccer players from morning until night. Those who knew him, he was considered the fun and silly uncle, most hilarious grandparent, one hell of a coach, most loving, dedicated, supportive husband and best dad ever. Not a day went by that there wasn't laughter, a smart remark or an hilarious story about his younger years that were told. For those who would love to come and celebrate his life well lived, please feel free to ditch the conventional dark colors and formal attire and we encourage colorful casual attire.
