 | Johnny Lopes passed on June 2nd, 2026 leaving behind a legacy of dedication to his community, passion for baseball, and devotion to those he loved.
Born on May 22, 1940, in Woodland, Johnny was raised in West Sacramento, a community he proudly called home throughout his life. He was the son of Cabo Verdean immigrants who settled in West Sacramento in the early 1930s, where his father became one of the area's pioneering farmers. Johnny was also the younger brother of professional boxer Joey Lopes.
Johnny graduated from James Marshall High School in 1958 and proudly served his country after entering the United States Army later that same year.
A well-known figure in the West Sacramento community, Johnny owned and operated Johnny's Time Out, a popular cocktail lounge and restaurant, from 1965 until 1988. Through his business and community involvement, he built countless friendships and became a familiar face to generations of local families.
Baseball was one of Johnny's greatest passions and the cornerstone of much of his life's work. A talented semi-professional player, he competed in both rural and county leagues and played in the Mexican American League. He was also one of the original sponsors of the Sacramento Night League from 1965 to 1976. His contributions to the game extended far beyond the field, as he dedicated nearly five decades to mentoring young athletes and helping shape the local baseball community.
From 2000 to 2004, Johnny served as both head coach and assistant coach at Delta High School. He also spent 47 years managing and coaching Little League Baseball and the West Sacramento American Legion Baseball League before retiring from coaching. His commitment to developing young players left a lasting impact on countless athletes and families throughout the region.
In recognition of his lifelong contributions to baseball, Johnny was inducted into the Mexican American Baseball Hall of Fame in 2004 and the LaSalle Baseball Club Hall of Fame in 2006.
Away from the baseball diamond, Johnny found joy on the water. An avid fisherman, he treasured the time spent fishing with family and friends, creating memories that will be cherished for generations.
Above all, Johnny was a devoted husband, father, mentor, and friend. He is survived by his beloved wife, Esther, with whom he shared 38 wonderful years of marriage; his son, John "Jay" Lopes; and his daughter-in-law, Kirsten. His strength, generosity, sense of humor, and unwavering commitment to family and community will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A Rosery service will be held at River City Funeral Chapel June 16th, 2026 at 1pm.
June 17th,2026 will be the Funeral Service at Our Lady of Grace Church in West Sacramento at 9am. Proceeding the Funeral a grave site service will be held at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery in Dixon Ca. Along with a reception held at the West Sacramento Moose Lodge at 12:30pm.
